How
quickly we forget…
I
placed membership here at this congregation just over five years ago. During
this time, I’ve been pretty faithful in my attendance. I love to “hang out” with my brothers and
sisters here. I’ve attended many home
bible studies. I’ve had a study in my
own home over a two year period. I’ve
entertained guest preachers for dinner.
I’ve also had a few singings in my home.
I’ve taught many classes here at the building as well. Recently at our business meeting, I raised my
hand, and the meeting coordinator who has known me for many years, could not
recall my name.
It
was just a brain blip, just one of those moments when you can’t remember
something common. It happens to all of
us sooner or later. However, if the
meeting coordinator had been talking to me specifically all week or referred to
me to me by name earlier in the day, he would not have forgotten my name.
This
is just like scripture. We think to
ourselves “Oh yes, I know this book of the bible.” Or “Oh I’ve studied this topic before.” But how quickly we forget
so many things. Every time we go
into a book or topic, I always without fail read something that seems new or
hear a perspective that appears a little different than I noted before. How quickly we forget.
So,
when was the last time you read your bible cover to cover? Maybe you’ve studied it frequently or read
the whole thing in pieces. But how quickly we forget.
I Double-Dog-Dare You to pick up
the “bible in a year” and do it! See for
yourself what you thought you remembered but didn’t. If you read it often, maybe you won’t have to
say “ How quickly I forgot”.
