Today’s
bulletin is from a fellow in Atlanta named David Maxon. Mike has offered to write me a bulletin now
and then, but he’s been busy lately <smile!> and instead sent me
this.
This
is an election year. I have no idea what the outcome of the upcoming election
will be. Will those who are elected lead us in righteousness or in more
wickedness? Will the mindless slaughter of the unborn finally come to an end?
Will the homosexual agenda be advanced? Will our religious freedoms be
protected? Will we be safe from terrorists? Will world peace be advanced? Will
the economy get any better? Will the problems of hunger, homelessness, and
social injustice be improved?
So many questions. No sure
answers. Everyone has an opinion, but no one knows. There are no guarantees,
not even if the candidates we perceive to be the “right” ones are elected. How
do we know they will lead the nation in righteousness? Will they stand for the
ideals they profess? Have they expressed their true convictions or have they
made a lot of empty promises? How can we be sure?
What
are my thoughts in an election year? Am I nervous? Am I apprehensive? Sure I am
(I’m only human). But I don’t despair. In all of the uncertainty, there is one
thing of which I am certain. In the midst of all the chaos we call “democracy”
there is a solid foundation on which I can stand.
David
asked the question: “If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous
do?” (Ps. 11:3) This was likely written when David was a fugitive in the
wilderness. He couldn’t trust the government. In fact, it was the government
itself that pursued his life. What could he do? Where could he turn? The next
verse answers, “The Lord is in His holy temple; the Lord’s throne is in
heaven.”
Who
is going to take the White House? Which party will control Congress? Who’s
going to fill vacant seats in the Supreme Court? We anxiously wait to see, but
should we despair? Should we fret if the “right” people are not put in office?
Have we forgotten about the One who is over all? There is One
who is infinitely greater than our Commander in Chief…One who makes laws which
over-rule anything passed by our Congress…One who presides over a court that
trumps any decision made by our so-called Supreme Court… (Just read Revelation
4 again).
God
is on the throne. He is in control. He is the Divine Ruler over all. He is King
of kings and Lord of lords. He is the executive, legislative, and judicial
branch all rolled into one. He is supreme. He is sovereign. No one can take
away His authority. It doesn’t matter how people rate His job performance. It makes
no difference what voters 18 to 35 think of His platform. He was never voted in
and He’ll never be voted out. He’s
serving a life-term…and He will never die!
God
is the supreme ruler and judge of this world. If the doctors who have
slaughtered millions of babies are never brought to justice by human courts,
they will be by the Divine court (2 Cor. 5:10). If our lawmakers allow
homosexuals to marry, it won’t change the law of God one bit (Psalm 119:142).
If our religious freedoms are stripped away and we suffer for it, we will
rejoice that we suffer shame for His precious name (Acts 5:41). If terrorists
come and take our lives, we will simply commit our souls to God as to a
faithful Creator (1 Peter 4:19). If the stock market crashes and inflation goes
through the roof, we’ll take it in stride and perhaps we’ll focus our attention
even more on our treasures that are laid up for us in heaven (Mt. 6:29).
I’m
not going to let myself worry about this election. Wicked governments have come
and gone, but the kingdom of God stands forever (Dan. 2). My prayer is that God
will be with whomever is elected that we, as
Christians, might lead a “quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and
reverence” (1 Tim. 2:2). But even then, I pray God’s will be done. And whatever
His will may be, I’ll be satisfied.
